The
Peruvian navajero has its origins around the time when Peru was part of the
spanish colony, after the establishment of lima around 1535, the spaniards
fought roosters with spurs and its was the way in the new colony too, but sinc
the port Of Callao was located strategyly for the international commerce ,
roosters from different parts of the Worlds started showing up in lima.
Malays
, OEG, combatiend du nord, asilsm ,etc
etc, which also brought the different weapons that were used and among them the
long filipino blade, soon after the first organized fights were taking place
the long blade was being used, this originated the TAPADA style of fights which
allowed you to fight your rooster any weight and any size and that included the
blade.
Malassian
rooster,base of Peruvian fowl.
Blade
that according to paintings from that era showed the blade in the right leg,
but that changed since its was only a style, years went by and by the 1700 and
1800 the fights increased popularity allowed
people to start making better crosses
Older
records showed that roosters crossed with spanish blood , english blood, malay
blood, asil blood was infused and by the 1800’s a standard rooster weighing
close to 11 pounds, long legged broad back big necks and head and loose
feathers, with the hability to fly high and score with accuracy to the body of
the opponent
Leaving
the losing rooster unable to continue the fight. This Peruvian rooster from
that era, had a mixed of different breeds as stated above. This continued for
many years but getting better in the style of fighting like getting them to
over power the other rooster in the air and extremely fast. The gallos from a
town call Supe had them and they were recognized and well known for those habilities.
Old picture around 1940,notice the big
sized rooster,around 6 kilos,12pounds.
Around 1930 the breeders from south of lima
in a town Cañete, were showing roosters that got the style of fighting that
will change the way of fighting until this day,
but in order to understand that we have to add this, in lima they had breeders that using english
blood roosters with the old peruvian navajero and adding spanish roosters had
created a line of roosters almost uniiform in style and body conformation, birchen
color with gold , with long heads from the OEG smaller in size than the
original navajero but with a smarter style of fighting and better plumage .Some
of those famous breeders of English roosters blood were;Fernando Graña,Humberto
y Santiago Pedraglio,Antonio Mendoza,Augustin Lancho y Carlos Fernandez
Stoll(my grandfather).
Now
we go back to the Cañete line, Abraham
Wong and Manuel Wong the fisrt one born in Peru from chinese immigrants and the
other one a chinese immigrant who could bearly speak proper spanish, these two
breeders with a lot of knowledge using
the original peruvian navajero chickens with malay infusión to 50 % and 25% to
the roosters from the city of LIMA heavy in OEG blood creating a rooster with a
weight around 9 lbs. With extreely shufflinig hability they were big headed
White or yellow legged small feather tails and broad backs
Tipic
Cañete rooster.
and with that shuffing habilty not seeing
until then, this type of Registro y rienda ( shuffling ) it was real fast for a
rooster that size, the hability to kick, score and moving forward at the same
time that caught the breeders eyes
buying large quantities of chicks and stags from Abraham wong and manuel Wong
taking them to their ranchs and letting grow until they were ready to fight
and used them in the most important events and fights from
that time.
That rooster became very popular for his
fighting style , and once the secret of the making of this line was known some
breeders try to duplicate it creating roosters almost similar and with great
results too. This gallo from Cañete was being shown in all the roosters venues
and raised to this days, in aroung 9 to 11 lbs extremely fast , better
conformation , high station with cutting habilities for the weapon he uses, (
but in my personal opinión can be better )
Our
traditiion still the Tapada with any size rooster and any weight, but is not
stopping the breeders of nowdays to try to infused the all around american
rooster, with smaller weight to get a rooster with defensive capabitity and
extremely Smart but its only a cycle since the breeder always goes back to the
peruvian navajero, Strong , beautiful, wih a different fighting style now
famous around the world unique and admire by most

Fernandez Stoll Melzi.
